Books and Babies:
Building Literacy from Birth to Preschool
It's no secret that reading is good for us. It helps us understand the world, temporarily escape it, and sometimes envision a better one.
But when should you start reading to your baby? How beneficial is reading? What should you read to them? How do you set a foundation to make your child a life-long reader?
Whether you have asked these questions or are just not thinking, "Oh crap, should I be asking these questions?!," Books and Babies is here to help.
What should I expect the workshop to cover?
Hosted by a librarian with twenty years of educational experience, this one hour workshop is designed to teach you:
why reading with babies is beneficial from the start
how it impacts literacy as children grow
to give you some tangible ways to make reading enjoyable for both you and your baby
Who is this for?
The workshop will be helpful to anyone who is currently pregnant, has a newborn, or even has an older baby and wants to learn about how reading and literacy can be supported at every stage through preschool. Pre-crawling babies are also welcome to attend.
Attendees will also have a chance to browse books from our West Acton neighborhood book store: The Silver Unicorn!

About Julie Peaco, your facilitator
Julie Peaco has worked in education for twenty years. She taught English at the high school and college level before returning to school to become a librarian. She is currently a high school librarian in the Peabody Public School system. The high school has an in-house preschool program, and one of Julie's favorite parts of her job is when the preschool kids visit the library for storytime. She also loves working with the Early Childhood Education classes instructing them on (you might have guessed it) early childhood literacy. When she is not at work, she spends her time with a ten-month-old, who is almost always handing her a book to read to him.
